Universe as a system and our parts in it

lately i have been drawn to seeing the universe as a kind of system, as a living organism. a system of which i am only a microscopic part, but of which i still at some level is fully conscious of. it is creation in some way becoming aware of itself.

i like to liken this universe to a growing plant. a plant begins with a small seed containing the program – the rules to be played out, so to speak – and gradually develops into something more complex, more mature – seed becoming seedling becoming birch tree. the plant and it’s growth is what i call a system, and just like it, is our universe.

only this universe is of an almost incomprehensible size. it contains not only the physical materia of quarks and atoms, planets and plants, animals and concrete, but also the vast and weird landscapes of the mind – the symbols and abstractions of language and logic along with our false identification with them – oceans of forms and ideas whose depth the intellectual mind can only touch.

the weird (and wonderful) thing in this gigantic system is the individual consciousness. the microscopic part i am, sitting here, typing these words, being aware of the giant forces at play. i seem at both times infinitely small and infinitely large, playing out my part.

often, it seems this is where mind and ego and their need for control steps in. as small children, we happily play out our parts in this system, but unconsciously so. as older, becoming conscious of ourselves, we are unconsciously influenced by ideas that cement our views of ourselves and of the world around us. unguided, unable to see what is happening, this influence becomes a kind of enslavery – we become trapped inside a machine of our own construct, instead of playing out our true program.

overcoming this fear, seeing these constructs for what they are, expanding outside of our egos, takes time and above all it takes tons of courage. but it is the only way forward. this is the new frontier, and what is most important (and frightening) about it is this: it is deeply personal. everyone of us have our own battles to fight, our own mountains to climb, and our own truths waiting to be discovered. at the same time, though, we’re all in this together.

where is the system headed? i don’t know. nobody knows. we CANNOT know – the only way to know is to play it out. consciously allowing ourselves to surrender, to die, and thus becoming a true part of the unfolding. i can only tell you this: it’s gonna be one hell of a trip, be sure of that!
